One down...literally

One of the House Democrats' major "100 Hour" agenda items ran into a roadblock today - the increase in the federal minimum wage.

The measure stalled in the Senate where some lawmakers insisted on tacking on a provision that would provide tax breaks for restaurants and other businesses that rely on low-paid workers. The Houe bill would have increased the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 over a period of years.

The Senate voted 54-43 in a losing effort to advance the measure to the president's desk for his signature.

Waiters and waitresses have testified against this well intentioned legislation of yours Ray on the state level saying it would actually lose them money.

Edith Prague wanted to give them minimum wage one year and it may have been the Commie Currant which reported Prauge was told she was killing them with kindness

They testified against her bill. They told her that if people knew they were getting minimum wage than they would not tip them. They could lose money.

I used to deliver pizza and its all in the tips Ray. That’s were the real money is made. My place charged a lousey two dollar fee which I got for delivery and most folks thought that was enough for me. So I got no tips and soon I had to quit.

I believe she dropped it as a result but that was years ago. I just thought you might want someone to offer the bits you accidentally left out in your article there.

Hey Ray. You know what? I am doing a little research on your Bulletin website and I found something interesting.

--- Well make that WHAT I DIDN’T FIND that was interesting.

I was looking through one story after another about Liberal Democrat Don Williams and all his ideas and I never found one single story that questions any of his hot ideas.

Hummmmmmm……..

I guess that’s just my poor researching skills huh? I am sure they are there somewhere. I wonder what I am doing wrong…..

Well anyway I just know you had to have done a story on this great idea of Donny’s he got right after the election. Williams wants a state run censorship committee. Donny is upset with the negativity of campaigns and wants to quiet things down.

Well not Censorship. Forget I said that. That’s just mean old meanie me being all negative and mean mean mean again. I am taking pills for this affliction. Sometimes they don’t kick in right away.

What Williams wants – REALLY – is a state committee set up by incumbents (those are only the people we can trust; right?) and it is going to be like a Truth Committee!

That means whenever one of these meanie upstart challengers (who should be letting our incumbents run unopposed in the FIRST PLACE!) goes lying about an incumbent’s record (like Don Williams jacking up the gas tax to highest in the nation back in the 1990’s) this new Truth Committee will swoop in and save the day!

Williams has this spiffy idea to take away the public funds the challenger if the Truth Committee determines they like the incumbent’s version of the truth better.

No wait. That’s not all! Then the incumbent will be given more money on top of that.

Isn’t that like soooo fair! It takes out the middlemen, you know, the media and the voters. No longer will they have to figure out which side they believe. This new Truth Committee will do all that for him.

That should quiet elections down quite a bit huh? Won’t that be great then? No more talk about voting records. How dull anyway!

I am looking for the piece you did on this legislation and I can’t seem to find it. Williams put it out right after the election. Williams has taken down his press release off his website over the weekend and won’t return my phone calls and emails.

How are people going to know about this great idea if you and I don’t tell them about it?

John...let me correct a misconception that you are inadvertently putting out there.

We utilize the Associated Press for coverage of the majority of legislative activities in Hartford, especially in those cases where AP will be covering an event like a press conference and it is unlikely that dual coverage of the event will produce any significant difference in stories.

Don Williams' coverage that you referenced here was covered by AP, and those AP stories did appear in the paper. However, not all the AP stories in the paper make it on to the paper's Web page at www.norwichbulletin.com. (one of those technical things well beyond my limited understanding of Web pages).

the point is, your suggestion that these items are not being covered or reported in the paper is incorrect.

Having clarified that, one of the purposes behind this blog is to provide that extra outlet for these issues to be discussed - which you have done - and now hopefully others might also want to voice their opinions.
